HON203: Honors Seminar 3

Serves as a unifying experience for all students in the Honors Program by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and pursuit of thought at a more advanced level of a particular theme or topic. Students deliver presentations focusing on the designated theme, Honors Program mentoring and enriched course projects. Students may attend plays, exhibitions, and/or participate in other activities. Required each semester a student is enrolled in the Honors Program. Prerequisite: Admission to the Honors Program or with permission of the Honors Program Committee and the instructor.

HUS102: Interpersonal Skills and Relationships

3 Credits

An experiential approach to everyday intrapersonal and interpersonal processes. Specific attention is given to observation, practice, and discussion of such topics as self-disclosure, trust, verbal and nonverbal expression of feelings, listening skills, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, stress management, and the value of cultivating diverse relationships. Highlights ways in which our own intersecting identities shape our perspectives and experiences.

HUS103: Family Crisis Intervention

Differentiate theories and apply models to examine healthy and unhealthy systems (individuals, family, and society). In particular, covers topics related to maltreatment, abuse, violence, and neglect within the family system. Reviews the multidisciplinary approach of human service agencies, law enforcement, and the legal system which either help or hinder client advocacy, empowerment and treatment.

HUS106: Early Childhood Education - Methods and Materials

In alignment with New York State's Early Learning Guidelines, students will examine the 7 core competencies (child development and growth; family and community relationships; observation and assessment; environment and curriculum; health, safety and nutrition; professionalism and leadership; administration and management) to assist children (ages birth to eight years) with their development (physical, intellectual, emotional, social and behavioral, etc.) within the context of formal learning environments.

HUS110: Internship in Human Services 1

Internship placement in conjunction with weekly class seminar designed to integrate theory with practical application to further develop professional Human Services helping values, knowledge, skills and behaviors. Placement must be instructor approved with site supervision by a qualified human services worker. Minimum of 125 internship hours per semester (average of at least 8 hours per week). Prerequisite: HUS101

Looks at the different influencing factors surrounding a substance use disorder and some of the possible impact it may have on the individual, family, and society. Basic theories, and self-help style groups are examined and applied to the development of a treatment for a person in recovery. Prerequisites: HUS 113

Provides an awareness of the student's own diversity and how their feelings and worldviews might differ from other diverse groups, and how those differences may influence behaviors positively and/or negatively.

Prepares students with the basic skills to work with individuals with a substance use disorder in a formal treatment setting. Incorporates theory, evidence-based practices, and best practice standards for paraprofessional human services work in areas of client prevention, intake, interviewing, assessment, treatment, discharge, recovery, follow-up, crisis and wellness. Students will explore micro, macro and mezzo level systems that affect case management and care coordination including but not limited to policy and procedure, legal and ethical guidelines, and cultural awareness.
