Early Childhood Education – Methods and Materials

In alignment with New York State’s Early Learning Guidelines, students will examine the 7 core competencies (child development and growth; family and community relationships; observation and assessment; environment and curriculum; health, safety and nutrition; professionalism and leadership; administration and management) to assist children (ages birth to eight years) with their development (physical, intellectual, emotional, social and behavioral, etc.) within the context of formal learning environments.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify appropriate development that occurs within each age range (birth to 8 years).
2. Describe delays in development that may occur within each age range (birth to 8 years).
3. Identify safe/healthy learning environments using Best Practice Standards (birth to 8 years).
4. Discuss ethical/professional standards for educators as outlined by the New York State Department of Education.
5. Describe strategies used when meeting the needs of individual learners in a classroom setting (guided play, positive reinforcement, social stories, modeling, etc.)
6. Discuss ways to include/engage caregivers in a child’s education at home, school, and within the community.
7. Describe the components of a lesson plan.
8. Design and demonstrate a lesson plan.
