Gerontology

Examines contemporary issues impacting older adults such as special needs, changing roles experienced with aging, community resources, legislation and programs designed to meet these multifaceted needs.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Define the term aging revolution or graying of America and give two statistics showing the growth in the older adult population today.
2. Identify two predictions for future growth and two reasons for the increase in this population.
3. List three negative and three positive stereotypes of aging.
4. Summarize two historical, cultural and ethnic explanations which explain stereotypes.
5. Identify two ways to break negative stereotypes.
6. List three social changes elders have experienced in later adulthood and two coping skills important for these transitions.
7. Describe at least two characteristics of individuals in various relationship statuses (married; partnered; single, never married; single, divorced; widowed; re-married; etc.).
8. Define sexuality and state one myth regarding older adults.
9. Describe two research studies related to sexuality in older adults and two findings for each.
10. Discuss three ways nursing homes can address sexuality.
11. List five typical characteristics of the aging body.
12. Name two chronic, major health problems and give two symptoms and two treatments for each.
13. Identify four healthy living choices and two components for each.
14. Discuss two factors about and two traits of older workers that impact decisions to work past retirement age.
15. Identify six activities of the daily living index (ADL).
16. State four instrumental activities of the daily living scale (IADL).
17. List five phases a terminally ill person goes through.
18. Describe the euthanasia and right-to-die movement and two implications for each.
