Impact of Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Looks at the different influencing factors surrounding a substance use disorder and some of the possible impact it may have on the individual, family, and society. Basic theories, and self-help style groups are examined and applied to the development of a treatment for a person in recovery. Prerequisites: HUS 113

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the impact of social, political, economic, and cultural systems on substance use.
2. Discuss the principles and practices of mutual aid groups (including the 12-step program).
3. Describe the benefits and limitations of mutual aid groups (including the 12-step program).
4. Assess toxicology screening measures (including limitations, legal implications, reporting language, and interpretation).
5. Identify various assessment and diagnostic tools for substance use disorders.
6. Discuss basic theory and skills required for counseling individuals and families (to include observation, education, childhood issues, boundaries, genograms, impact on families).
7. Discuss relapse and its impact on commitment to recovery, and the family’s ability to provide active support.
8. Define the developmental stages of recovery.
9. Identify client payer systems and funding sources.
