AUDITON DETAILS:
Auditions will consist of preparing a monologue from the play. Although there are many different characters in the play (see CASTING BREAKDOWN) the monologues provided are from one of the following characters: BOY (Peter) MOLLY BLACK STACHE MRS. BUMBRAKE

You will choose one (1) of these monologues to prepare whether you are interested in auditioning for one of these characters, or some other character in the play. Obviously, if you’re interested in auditioning for one of these roles then choose the appropriate piece. However, if you are interested in one of the other roles in the play, choose the piece that you feel best show off your abilities.

You may download and print the monologues, or you can stop by the bulletin board outside E115 to pick up copies.

Please note: Be familiar with all four (4) pieces just in case we want to hear you take a shot at a different character. Additionally, although the show is not a musical, we may ask you to sing a little something (Happy Birthday, Twinkle Twinkle, or some other song you like and know!)

As for what I’m looking for in the audition…It’s not about coming in and being a “brilliant actor.”
I want to see the following:
Have a point of view about what you’re talking about. How do you feel about what your saying,
Make strong choices. Commit to that point of view. Be bold.
Take a chance. Go for broke. Go over the top if appropriate!
Show me you. How would you handle yourself in the situation the character is in?
And most importantly…HAVE FUN!! It’s call a play, right? Let your self have a good time!

If you have any questions about the audition process, the rehearsal/production process, or the play itself, please do not hesitate to reach out to me, at sanagar@genesee.edu.

PLAY OVERVIEW:
Winner of (5) 2012 TONY Awards and billed as a “grown-ups prequel to Peter Pan,” Peter and the Starcatcher is a wildly inventive piece of theatre that proposes an upending origin story to one of literature, film, and stage’s most beloved fables and group of characters.

How did a miserable orphan boy become the legendary, heroic Peter Pan, the Boy Who Would not Grow Up? How did a bumbling, in-over-his head, rogue scoundrel become the dreaded and feared pirate, Captain Hook? How did the boys get Lost? These questions and more are framed within the adventurous story of young Molly Astor, a Starcatcher in training in service to Queen Victoria.

When Molly’s and the Peter’s paths collide, they must overcome their initial distrust of each other and band together to find and protect a precious trunkful of magical “starstuff.” Relying on nothing but their wits, friends, and eventual bravery, keeping the “starstuff” out of the hands of Black Stache and his pirate crew takes the young adventurers across the sea, to faraway lands, and back to London.

Using a variety of performance styles including ensemble storytelling, physical theatre, improvisation, puppetry, clowning, vaudeville, stage combat, and even musical theatre, Peter and the Starcatcher explores timeless themes and questions about what it means to be human: What is the value of friendship and loyalty? What does it mean to have a purpose? How do we best face the trials and unfairness in our lives? Where can we find a glimmer of light even in the darkest of moments?

Through intrigue, pathos, creativity, and the shared communal experience of performing and watching a play, Peter and the Starcatcher is a beautiful testament to both the inherent goodness of the human spirit, and the power of theatre and storytelling to bring people together and provide us with hope. To quote Molly: “To have faith is to have wings…”

CASTING BREAKDOWN

AVAILABLE ROLES:
With the exception of BOY and MOLLY ASTER, all roles are open to non-gender specific casting.

BOY
The eventual Peter Pan, a nameless and friendless 13 year-old orphan, deeply mistrustful of adults and neglected to the point of never having seen the sun. He is sometimes moody, defiant, but also has a fiery capacity for loyalty, right and wrong, and above all else, hope. His adventures allow him to find the hero within himself, and to take on a name worthy of the legend he becomes.

MOLLY ASTER
A 13 year-old apprentice Starcatcher eager to prove herself to her father. Highly intelligent, passionate, and physically adept, she is still sometimes socially awkward. She’s comes off as something of a know-it-all, and her relationship with the orphan boys is driven as much by competition as it is by friendship.

BLACK STACHE
So called due to the black mustache that is a trademark in his family, this charismatic, melodramatic, fairly intelligent but somewhat inept future Captain Hook is in search of a great hero who he can oppose to become a great villains. Stache is given to scenery chewing and anachronistic jokes, as well as snarky asides and interactions with the audience.

PRENTISS
One of the Boy’s orphan companions. Pompous and sarcastic, he is intent on proclaiming himself the leader of the gang of Orphans but is too cowardly to really do anything about it, and usually follows Peter and Molly with only nominal protest.

TED
One of the Boy’s orphan companions, nicknamed ‘Tubby Ted’. Constantly hungry, he is obsessed with food and faints at the mere mention of sticky pudding. He accepts Molly as a mother figure immediately, often referring to her by that title.

SMEE
Black Stache’s faithful first mate. More intelligent than he gives himself credit for (but still not overly bright), Smee is willing to follow his captain in any amount of hare-brained schemes including disguising himself as a Mermaid.

MRS. BUMBRAKE
Molly’s faithful nanny, a prim and proper Englishwoman prone to alliteration. She is also sassy and takes no bull from anyone. In the tradition of the pantomime dame, the actor cast in this role also plays TEACHER, a wise and mysterious mermaid.

LORD LEONARD ASTER
Molly’s father, a Starcatcher on a secret mission for Queen Victoria. He loves his daughter dearly but is perhaps guilty of placing his mission above her safety. Constantly paranoid about the security of top-secret conversation, he has trained Molly to converse in Dodo, Porpoise, and Norse code (a Morse code-like system supposedly used by ancient Vikings).

BILL SLANK
The nasty, greedy, and cruel captain of The Neverland. It is Slank’s greed for the Queen’s secret treasure that sets the entire plot in motion. The actor in this role may also portray FIGHTING PRAWN.

FIGHTING PRAWN
The fierce chief of the tribe of Mollusk Islanders, who was sold into slavery in England as a boy, where he became a kitchen slave in a fine house. He speaks almost exclusively in Italian cooking terms. The actor in this role may also portray BILL SLANK

ALF
A salty and flatulent sailor with a heart of gold on The Neverland. He falls deeply and instantly in love with Mrs. Bumbrake. He is good-natured, but somewhat coarse and at first meeting seems to have little time or patience for children.

GREMPKIN
The sadistic schoolmaster of St. Norbert’s Orphanage for Lost Boys,

SANCHEZ
One of Black Stache’s crew. Actor could have fun with using a variety of bad, un-placeable accents

MACK
The world’s most incompetent Sailor. That’s saying a lot given the dearth of incompetence among this group of sea-farers.

HAWKING CLAM
Fighting Prawn’s son. Proud, honorable, devout to his father and his tribe.

CAPTAIN ROBERT FALCON SCOTT
Captain of The Wasp, and Lord Aster’s old friend from their schooldays, based loosely on the real Robert Falcon Scott. Noble, authoritative, and…very British.

ENSEMBLE
The Ensemble doubles as many of the supporting characters above, as well as narrators, mermaids, pirates, sailors, islanders, and various other creatures, locations, and people throughout the show.
