A Health Director in a New York State summer camp must have their EMT, LPN, RN or higher license.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will have openings for 4 nurses during the summer of 2014. These nurses will have the title of Health Director at one of the four NYSDEC Summer Environmental Education Summer Camps. The employment period is approximately from June 12 - August 17. Within this 9-10 week period there are 2 weeks of staff training and 7 weeks of summer camps. The summer camp program is for youth ages 10 - 17. The program teaches youth about the environment and gives them opportunities to explore, learn, make new friends and live in a community with healthy choices and positive experiences.

Being a Health Director at a summer camp is a professionally rewarding experience giving the person experience in working with youth, parents, staff, the Department of Health and local medical facilities. These experiences help to start a foundation that will create a well rounded health care professional.

The position is paid by the State of New York, making the employee part of the retirement system. Room and board and a weekly salary of approximately $770 (there are about 10 pay periods) are two of the benefits of being a camp Health Director with the NYSDEC Summer Camp Program. The other great benefit is the working atmosphere with our camps located in the Adirondack Mountains (Saranac Lake and Warrensburg), Catskill Mountains (Livingston Manor) and Allegany Mountains (Caneadea).
