Carte de visite, French meaning “visiting card” were small photographic portraits measuring just 3.5 by 2.5 inches. In 1859, they gained widespread popularity  throughout Europe and America and were often traded among friends and visitors. This early photography collection also provides a fashion look of the 1860s. Display courtesy of John Potera.
