Lab for VET209
VET LB9 is the application of didactic instruction for VET209 and a required co-requisite. Skills and performance in VET LB9 are assessed as a component of VET 209 and therefore, must be successfully completed in addition to all the requirements for VET 209. Students will develop skills necessary to properly prepare, handle and submit samples for parasite and microbial analysis as well as safety procedures required in a laboratory setting. Prerequisites: VET102 and BIO123, BIOLB3 with a grade of “C” or higher. Corequisites: VET209, VET223, BIO124, BIOLB4, and VET124.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Prepare specimens for analysis and/or shipment according to laboratory protocols.
2. Collect representative sample for microbial culture.
3. Culture bacteria in a variety of growth media.
4. Perform microbial and cytological staining procedures.
5. Perform antibiotic sensitivity.
6. Perform biochemical tests on bacteria.
7. Perform routine laboratory testing of cytology specimens which may include dermatophyte preparations to ID common animal pathogens.
8. Prepare and evaluate samples for parasites.
9. Implement measures to ensure safety of patients, clients and staff.
