Lab for VET246
VET LB6 is the application of didactic instruction for VET 246 and a required co-requisite. Skills and performance in VET LB6 are assessed as a component of VET 246 and therefore, must be successfully completed in addition to all the requirements for VET 246. Emphasis will be placed on learning techniques used in practice such as proper patient restraint and animal handling, physical assessment, collection of diagnostic samples, placement and maintenance of intravenous catheters, administration of fluids, drugs and medications, applying and removing bandages. Prerequisite: BIO124, BIOLB4, VET201, VET223, and VETLB3 with a grade of “C” or higher. Corequisites: VET 234, VET LB4, VET 245, VET LB5, and VET 246

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Collect samples for diagnostic testing using proper technique.
2. Administer medications by oral and parenteral routes to patients.
3. Perform common routine procedures which may include applying, removing and maintaining bandages, wound and abscess care, trimming of hooves, or dehorning.
4. Collect samples at necropsy for diagnostic evaluation.
5. Perform an accurate physical assessment.
6. Perform physical restraint as appropriate for the species.
7. Discuss permanent and temporary methods of animal identification.
