Veterinary Clinical Calculations

Emphasizes the mathematical concepts and skills used in the practice of Veterinary Technology. Topics include dosage calculations, fractions, percentages, percent solutions, fluid therapy and CRI’s. Emphasis will be placed on how these techniques are used in the administration of medications and treatments for patient use. Co-requisite: VET102 and BIO123/BIOLB3.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. List and explain the “Rights” of medication administration.
2. Solve simple arithmetic problems, including fractions and decimals, with or without a calculator.
3. Calculate an unknown variable accurately.
4. Demonstrate the ability to convert given measurements between American Standard, household, apothecary, and metric measurement systems.
5. Define the components of a drug regimen, including pharmacological abbreviations.
6. Interpret a dose label accurately.
7. Calculate drug doses accurately based on given drug regimen components, as well as the physical form of the drug (i.e. liquid, pills.)
8. Calculate dilutions and infusions.
