Introduction to Veterinary Technology

The course introduces the student to the profession of the Veterinary Technician. The role of the veterinary technician in private practice and non-practice settings will be examined. This course will also look at the history of the profession, certification process, personal and emotional issues confronting veterinary technicians. Recognition of the common species of domestic animals and the common breeds within each species will be covered. Students will develop an understanding of common husbandry practices and terms used that apply to each species. Fall only. Pre-requisite: Acceptance into Veterinary Technology Program. BIO123/BIOLB3 as co-requisite.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain professional issues confronting the veterinary technician.
2. Discuss law and ethical codes for veterinary technicians, including confidentiality of client information.
3. Compare the roles and responsibilities of the technician in private and non-private practices.
4. Explain the licensing/certification process.
5. Discuss the history of veterinary technology.
6. Create a medical record for an individual patient using the SOAP format.
7. Identify common domestic animal species and breeds which could include cows, horses, dogs, cats, sheep, goats, and pigs.
8. Describe common animal husbandry practices.
9. Define specific terms used within the common domestic animal species.
10. Define commonly used veterinary medical abbreviations.
11. Analyze medical terms based on common root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
