Meeting and Convention Planning

Examines the different segments of the conventions and meetings market. Includes the development of a marketing plan for a specific property, and a service function organization plan, including detailed information on room setups, food and beverage functions, audiovisual equipment, and other aspects of group meeting business. Fall only. Prerequisites: THM101, BUS101, and ENG101 or permission of instructor.

1. Describe types of meetings.
2. Research the needs of organizations that hold meetings.
3. Explain the concept of yield management in the Meeting & Convention industry.
4. Describe current trends in the meetings industry.
5. Explain key strategies in negotiating a meeting contract.
6. Describe the role of a convention services manager.
7. Communicate effectively in a professional manner.
8. Identify creative menu choices that could be successfully served at a meeting.
9. Identify the proper meeting room set-up options as they relate to the goals of a meeting.
10. Compare and contrast public versus private meetings/conventions.
