Introduction to Psychology

Introduces the power and potential of psychology in real world contexts through an examination of the five pillars of psychological science: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, mental and physical health. Emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, scientific research, ethical standards and sociocultural competence. [Note: The New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services has reviewed this course and finds that it is consistent with established standards for the CASAC-T credential.] Prerequisite: Completion of the Genesee Community College reading proficiency.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Define and explain basic psychological concepts in the five pillars of psychological science (biological,
cognitive, developmental, social, mental and physical health).
2. Summarize how psychological science explains general principles that govern behavior while recognizing
individual differences.
3. Compare and contrast the advantages and limitations of scientific research.
4. Recognize how certain groups and/or perspectives have been historically absent from psychological scientific
research.
5. Examine how psychological science can be used to counter unsubstantiated statements, opinions or beliefs.
6. Identify how ethical standards and sociocultural competence promote diversity and foster inclusion in pursuit of a more just society.
7. Analyze how aspects of identity (e.g. race, gender, class) may influence psychological processes.
