Phlebotomy
This course is designed to gain the knowledge in technical and procedural aspects of both adult and pediatric phlebotomy required to become a Phlebotomy technician. Concepts in infection control, legal issues, supplies, special collection and basic clerical skill used for patient interaction are included. This course prepares students to take the national certification exam to become a Phlebotomist.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the duties and define the legal issues of a phlebotomist.
2. Describe the venous anatomy on which phlebotomy can be performed.
3. Describe the roles and responsibilities of different types of providers within the healthcare industry.
4. Use common medical prefixes, roots, suffices, and proper anatomical terminology as it relates to the human body.
5. Identify basic anatomy, pathophysiology or specialty practice of the cardiovascular system.
6. Apply precautions and standards outlined by the CDC to protect from pathogen exposure.
7. Identify the process for labeling, transporting, or reporting samples.
8. Apply laboratory quality and safety regulations using QA and QC procedures.
9. Describe the proper methods used to collect and handle non-blood specimens (such as urine, stool, and cultures).
10. Differentiate between the various components of blood.
11. Describe the steps in the safe and proper use of a centrifuge.
12. Describe the steps for accurate specimen collection and documentation procedures.
13. Demonstrate correct collection methods, such as capillary and venipuncture.
14. Discuss complications associated with venipuncture/phlebotomy.
