Principles of Coaching

Introduces high school and college level coaching. Presents coaching philosophy, roles and responsibilities, legal requirements, discipline, respect, motivation, practice planning, teaching methodology, conditioning and coaching ethics. Includes New York State mandated Child Abuse Prevention Workshop, SAVE Legislation (Schools Against Violence in Education), Alcohol and Tobacco Use and Abuse, and Signs and Symptoms of Drug Use. Mandated Reporter and SAVE Legislation Certification available.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify New York State and National Coaching requirements and the role of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
2. Develop a personal coaching style statement based upon an analysis of styles presented.
3. Identify and describe qualities and characteristics of effective coaches.
4. Describe motivational techniques used in athletics.
5. Discuss the business aspects of coaching.
6. Design a full practice session for sport of choice.
7. Identify the legal responsibilities coaches have.
8. Develop evaluation tools to be used by a coach throughout a season.
9. Identify the important historical legal issues that affect athletics.
10. Develop a coaching philosophy essay based upon values, beliefs, principles or ethics.
11. Solve a coaching scenario issue using critical thinking and ethical judgment (identify the issue, explore solutions, examine for bias, choose course of action).
