Professional Issues in Nursing

Introduces the student to professional issues relevant to current trends in nursing, leadership and management. The emphasis is placed on role transition and promoting an environment of quality patient care and safety. Prerequisites: BIO 153, NUR 112 and NUR122 with a grade of “C” or higher, and NUR LC2 with a grade of “CP”. Prerequisites for PN to RN students: NUR 131 and BIO 153 with a grade of “C” or higher. Co-requisites: NUR 211 and NUR LC3.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Relate standards of professional nursing practice to the nurse’s role in leadership and management.
2. Compare and contrast the principles of nursing leadership and management.
3. Prepare for the transition from novice nurse to nurse leader/manager.
4. Examine the relationship between legal/ethical issues in healthcare and leadership/management roles in nursing.
5. Discuss current trends in nursing and the impact on the role of the nurse.
6. Explain how the nurse leader/ manager participates in:
a.Staffing decisions, team building efforts and scheduling policies of the organization
b.Delegation, conflict resolution and collective bargaining issues
c.Quality improvement and performance appraisal
7. Differentiate between health care systems and policies from a global perspective.
