Pharmacology for Nurses
Presents essential concepts of pharmacology. Designed to promote the use of critical thinking in the application of drug therapy. Emphasis is placed on the integration of pharmacologic principles, legal responsibilities of the nurse and the nursing process. Prerequisites: NUR 111 and BIO 152 with a grade of “C” or higher, and NUR LC1 with a grade of “CP”. Prerequisite or co-requisite: BIO 153 with a grade of “C” or better. Co-requisites: NUR 112 and NUR LC2.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the major classifications of commonly prescribed and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
2. Compare and contrast the types of medications used for selective disorders.
3. Distinguish between the advantages and disadvantages of medications used to treat selective disorder.
4. Discuss safe medication administration with regard to drug actions, clinical indications, adverse reactions, drug interactions, efficacy and nursing implications.
5. Identify the nurse’s role in monitoring therapeutic and non-therapeutic effects of medications.
6. Identify teaching/ learning needs of the patient receiving medications.
7. Recognize the need for collaboration which involves shared planning, decision making, problem solving, and collaboration with the patient, peers, and other members of the healthcare team. (Competency: Collaboration)
