Basic Math Skills

Students move through a series of content modules using a mastery learning approach, making extensive use of computer software for content delivery, practice of skills, and assessment (graded homework, quizzes, and module pre- and post-tests). Topics include operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and signed numbers; ratios, rates, and proportions; percent; measurement conversions within the U. S. Customary System and within the Metric System using Unit Analysis; scientific notation; evaluating and simplifying variable expressions; solving linear equations; and some basic geometry. Prerequisite: By placement.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Use the Order of Operations Agreement to evaluate simple numerical expressions involving integers or fractions
2. Write the prime factorization of a given natural number that is less than 1000
3. Evaluate expressions involving basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) with rational numbers (integers, decimals, fractions, or mixed numbers), expressing the answers in simplest form
4. Use a symbol ( , =) to identify the quantitative relationship between two values (two integers, fractions with unlike denominators, two decimals, or a fraction compared with a decimal)
5. Round a given whole number or decimal number to a given place value
6. Represent a rational number in words when given a numeric value, or represent a number with numerals when given its name verbally.
7. Express the relationship between two quantities (measured with either the same or different units) using a ratio or rate written in simplest fraction form, or in the form of a unit rate, as directed
8. Solve a proportion that accurately represents a situation initially described verbally
9. Convert a given number from one of the following forms to any of the other two forms: percent, fraction/mixed number, decimal
10. Find the missing value (percent, base, or amount) when the other two values are known, using the percent proportion or using the equation: percent x base = amount.
11. Evaluate simple absolute value expressions involving rational numbers
12. Convert given numbers from scientific notation to standard decimal form or from standard decimal form to scientific notation
13. Simplify a variable expression using an appropriate combination of properties or techniques including the Distributive Property, Commutative or Associative Properties of Addition or Multiplication, as well as combining like terms
14. Solve a linear equation in one variable that may include variable or constant terms on both sides of the equation, or may include expressions in parentheses
15. Write a variable expression or equation that represents a mathematical relationship described verbally
16. Convert various measurements (length, distance, weight, mass, area, volume, capacity, time) to equivalent measurements with different sized units within the U.S. Customary System or within the Metric System.
