Children’s Literature

Examines classical and contemporary selected works of children’s literature from a variety of genres. Develops critical thinking skills to make informed judgments about children’s books. Considers a variety of literary criticism models and applies them to representative works. Online course requires computer knowledge. Prerequisite: ENG101.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Present fiction and poetry preferences from classical to contemporary children’s literature.
2. Define some formal literary elements applicable to various genres.
3. Assess a variety of literary devices or elements in chosen texts.
4. Apply literary or aesthetic critical approaches to a number of Caldecott Award-winning texts.
5. Describe a variety of developments or changes within the field.
6. Analyze representative non-fiction, fiction, folktale, and poetry texts.
7. Discuss some dominant themes in children’s literature.
8. Contextualize children’s literature historically and culturally.
