Organizational Management Skills for Community College Personnel

Developed specifically for community college employees readying for advancement opportunities, this course focuses specifically on the development of skills necessary for a variety of leadership roles. Administrators new to their positions, teaching faculty, and support and professional staff will engage in various knowledge and skills-building activities designed to enhance and build upon current knowledge and skills sets. The curriculum will include foundational management concepts common across all job descriptions, combined with more specialized curriculum focused on the participant’s contractual function. Sample topics covered include: Interpersonal relationship development; negotiations and conflict management; messaging in communication; management of expectations; job performance appraisal; and change leadership. Prerequisite: LDR 271.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss how principles of leadership can be applied to various situations or contexts in a community college setting.
2. Describe a variety of innovative approaches to address issues of importance, solve problems, or meet a need of the organization.
3. Apply a variety of financial skills as appropriate to specific situations.
4. Advocate for a cause, idea, or colleague as necessary in various situations.
5. Explain a variety of principles related to ethics and diversity as they apply to management in a community college setting.
6. Outline the steps necessary in the successful management of personnel involved in a conflict.
7. Describe the process of professional discipline.
8. Conduct an effective and constructive performance appraisal.
9. Identify the principles of professional accountability and describe a variety of strategies to hold oneself or others accountable for particular actions or behaviors.
10. Reflect on one’s own leadership style and how it may need adjustment in various situations.
