Building Integrated Reading and Writing Habits

Emphasizes strategic reading and writing skills essential for academic success. Improves basic reading and vocabulary skills. Develops student mastery of basic grammar, paragraph and short essay writing. Focus will be placed on expanding strategies to become successful in the courses which satisfy the college requirements for reading and writing skills. Placement is determined by college placement and proficiency requirements, or permission of instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Expand college-level vocabulary using various strategies (phonics, syllabication, word parts, context clues, diction, etc.)
2. Apply appropriate reading process strategies (identifying genre, topic, purpose, audience, main ideas, supports, organizational structures, etc.) to a variety of texts.
3. Analyze texts through the use of critical reading and thinking questions.
4. Respond to a variety of texts through the appropriate selection and use of summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation.
5. Complete stages in the process of writing (including pre-writing, drafting, and revising) to compose well-organized, coherent paragraphs or short essays that match the needs of specific audiences and rhetorical situations.
6. Use grammatical conventions in a variety of writing situations.
7. Develop a structured paper using the stages of the writing process.
