College Composition

Concentrates on the rhetorical principles and strategies essential for clear, effective academic writing. Emphasizes the stages of the writing process and the critical thinking skills necessary to create appropriately researched and documented college level prose. Draws readings and models for analysis from a variety of college level sources. Requires students to produce a minimum of 20 pages of writing, excluding exercises and quizzes. Prerequisite: ENG 100 or ESL 100 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, or IRW 091 with a grade of ‘B’ or higher, or by placement.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Create college level academic essays (in support of academic discourse across the curriculum), using the stages of the writing process;
2. Revise college level academic essays (in support of academic discourse across the curriculum), using the stages of the writing process;
3. Express a specific opinion or position with supporting logic or evidence;
4. Apply relevant composition strategies to match the needs of specific audiences and rhetorical situations;
5. Adapt the purpose of their writing to match the needs of specific audiences and rhetorical situations;
6. Critique aspects (purposes, strategies, rhetorical devices, etc.) of their own and others writing;
7. Differentiate between credible and non-credible primary or secondary sources, using judgments of authority, reliability, or usefulness;
8. Incorporate relevant, appropriately documented research into their own essays.
