Cooperative Education

Integrates key factors influencing learning in contemporary society with an individually assigned guided field observation within a classroom, resource room, technology room, or computer lab. Assisted by an advisor, students document workplace experiences and degree program goals and learning objectives in a professional portfolio. Prerequisite: Last semester of program and permission of instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Construct a professional portfolio appropriate for an entry level position as a Teaching Assistant documenting current philosophy of education and core knowledge relevant to the function of an educator and concentrated knowledge in the skills relevant to concentration selected
2. Engage in and critically reflect upon a variety of professional development workshops/activities designed to enhance current applied knowledge within the field of education.
3. Complete a cooperative education placement under the direct supervision and evaluation of a certified teacher as documented through extensive written and oral reflection
4. Write an APA formatted research paper based upon the integration of a minimum of two current research articles related to research-based best practices in education (based upon specified criteria)
5. Identify steps necessary to attain NYS Teaching Assistant Certification Levels I through III.
