Educational Foundations 2

Examines and analyzes key elements of and issues that affect the interaction taking place between teacher and student within the public school classroom. Focuses on goals and objectives, instructional strategies, classroom management, and evaluation of student progress. Students gain first-hand practical experience related to the learning interactions within the context of a guided classroom field observation blended with classroom content and content gained in Educational Foundations I. Prerequisites: EDF 201 or permission of the instructor and a G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Analyze key societal issues/forces that have an impact on the educational reform movements in American education
2. Reflect critically upon the significance of the various professional, ethical, and legal issues that have an impact on American education and the pursuit of a career in education
3. Create measurable instructional objectives reflective of all levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy aligned with designated learning outcomes (current standards, varying needs of the learner, etc.)
4. Evaluate formative and summative assessments, with an emphasis on authentic assessment techniques
5. Evaluate various methods of improving classroom instruction with regard to appropriateness and effectiveness, with an extended focus on positive classroom management
6. Integrate relevant course content (including curriculum, instructional strategies, assessment, classroom management) into the construction, execution and reflection of a required micro-teaching lesson plan consistent with current standards and the certification sought
7. Write an APA formatted research paper based upon the integration of a minimum of four current research articles related to the application of research-based best practices in the field of education (based upon specified criteria)
8. Evaluate teaching as a profession and viable career choice in preparation for their continued professional growth and transfer through the construction of a teaching portfolio including refinement of the personal philosophy of teaching/education, applied service learning, and participation in a minimum of two professional development activities
9. Engage in extensive reflective practice as part of a required guided field observation under the direct supervision and evaluation of a certified classroom teacher consistent with the concentration and level of certification sought (based upon specified criteria.)
