Criminal Law
Introduces students to the criminal law and the New York Penal Code. Examines the historical development of laws in the United States. Discusses the parties of crime, the elements of crime, inchoate crimes and the various categories of crime, including crimes against persons, property offenses and crimes that harm society. Analyzes the criminal defenses used in the Criminal Justice system. Prerequisite: CRJ 101 or PLG114.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the sources for criminal law (including the U.S. Constitution, common law, statutory law and administrative law).
2. Explain the limitations that the United States Constitution places on criminal law.
3. Summarize how the Principle of Legality impacts criminal law.
4. Define the elements of a crime.
5. Interpret criminal statutes to determine the elements that a prosecutor must prove in order to establish that a defendant is guilty of a crime.
6. Differentiate between accomplices and accessors.
7. Distinguish among the three inchoate crimes (attempt, solicitation and conspiracy).
8. Compare and contrast the various levels of homicide.
9. Differentiate among the various sex offenses.
10. Distinguish among the various assaultive crimes.
11. Differentiate among the various property crimes.
12. Assess the likelihood of success of various criminal defenses.
13. Analyze contemporary social issues related to criminal law.
14. Compare and contrast global solutions to social issues grounded in criminal law.
15. Communicate effectively in a professional setting.
