Introduction to Criminal Justice

Presents overview of the administration of criminal justice in the United States and the problems of crime prevention and control in American society. Prepares students for further study in criminal justice, for careers in criminal justice agencies, and for knowledgeable citizenship.

1. Define crime.
2. Differentiate among felonies, misdemeanors and violations.
3. Compare and contrast the main sources for crime statistics in the United States (Uniform Crime Reports and National Crime Victimization Survey).
4. Describe various criminological theories used to explain why people commit crime.
5. Explain the organizational structure of the criminal justice system (police, courts and corrections).
6. Describe the functions of the three components of the criminal justice system (police, courts and corrections).
7. Summarize the criminal justice process from crime occurrence through post release supervision.
8. Provide examples of how discretion is employed by members of the criminal justice system.
9. Research a criminal justice career and prepare a scholarly presentation using proper APA citations.
10. Distinguish among common law, case law and statutory law.
11. Name the elements of a crime.
12. Describe various criminal defenses.
13. Compare and contrast the United States criminal justice system with criminal justice systems located around the world and prepare a social science research proposal on one aspect of that research.
14. Communicate effectively in a professional setting.
