Transportation and Distribution Management

This course will focus on understanding and managing the various attributes associated with providing timely, cost effective and efficient distribution planning and transportation from the point of conversion to an intermediate party or end user. Included will be such items as the various modes of transportation available as well as specific carrier selection along with their associated regulations, individual economic attributes and service intervals. Financial characteristics such as rate making, fuel surcharges, contracts, discounting, freight consolidation, distribution analyses, product returns, claims and operational considerations impacting other organizations within the firm will be fully addressed. Technology, documentation preparation, organizational structure and responsibilities and horizontal interdepartmental relationships will also be discussed.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the objectives associated with Transportation and Distribution (T&D) Management from a global perspective (internally to the firm, external to the marketplace).
2. Use specific terminology and nomenclature associated with T&D.
3. Describe specific analytics and concepts associated with T&D.
4. Compare and contrast various T&D strategies to optimize competitiveness in the marketplace; customer value, efficiencies and cost effectiveness.
5. Analyze the tradeoffs associated with mode and carrier selection; carrier operations, costs, shipment size, weight, handling characteristics, service levels, rules, regulations etc.
6. Explain how timely and accurate information flows positively impacts T&D.
7. Summarize how factors associated with positive shipper and carrier relationships contributes to strategic alliances and a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
8. Use analytical skills to optimize T&D operations through promotion of cross functional cooperation.
9. Express the need for T&D members to be aware of their responsibilities to the organization; legal, contractual, ethical, social.
10. Compare and contrast alternative cost effective T&D strategies that are consistent with the overall policies of the firm.
11. Use various planning tools to support the firm’s T&D strategies.
12. Explain appropriate mode/carrier selections consistent with situational parameters (costs versus service constraints).
