Principles of Biology

A course intended for the non-science major that introduces basic characteristics of life, organisms, their interactions, and the scientific process. Improves scientific thinking and increases science literacy. Explores five core concepts of biology: studying and using the scientific method, evolution, ecology, genetics, and biodiversity. Two class hours, two lab hours. This course is not applicable to the Biology AS.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Engage in activities using the process of science.
2. Describe the organization and characteristics of living organisms.
3. Summarize major components of the theory of evolution (natural selection, mutation, speciation, extinction, etc.).
4. Explain the basic principles of ecology.
5. Identify and describe how organism interact with each other the environment.
6. Predict the outcomes of genetic problems using principles of Mendelian genetics.
7. Describe the basic principles of molecular genetics.
8. Assess the role humans play in influencing changes in the world around us (medicine, agriculture, technology, etc.).
