American Sign Language 1

Develops basic communication skills in American Sign Language. Emphasizes the learning of grammatical structures and sign vocabulary in meaningful contexts (e.g., introducing oneself, discussing living situations, sharing about family). Topics include making connections with Deaf people, higher institutions for the Deaf, and visual ways of living. ASL and Deaf culture are taught and learned using the immersion method. Prerequisites: None.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain culturally appropriate behaviors with the Deaf which may include: attention-getting techniques or communication.
2. Compare and contrast Deaf culture with one’s own culture with regards to visual ways of living.
3. Identify grammatical features of ASL which may include: types of questions, transitions, contrastive structure, or pronouns.
4. Demonstrate number-related signs such as: lengths of time, ages, or frequency of performing different activities.
5. Identify sign vocabulary as those related to topics such as, but not limited to: language backgrounds, towns and cities or family members.
