African American Literature
Examines the binding, common themes of African-American literature from the late eighteenth century to the present. Establishes useful definitions for the novel, the short story, poetry, drama, and literary nonfiction (e.g. autobiography, essay, oratory) as they apply to African-American literature in particular. Prerequisite: ENG101.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the historical and social context of literary works within their appropriate periods (e.g. Reconstruction, Harlem Renaissance, Black Arts Era, etc.).
2. Relate aspects of historical literature pieces to contemporary personal experiences.
3. Describe how the historic and social events and trends are reflected in the literature of the time.
4. Identify influential writers of African American literature beginning in the Colonial period.
5. Identify landmark literary works beginning in the Colonial period.
6. Describe commonly agreed upon themes or aesthetic concerns particular to African American literature.
7. Describe commonly agreed upon literary devices, structures, or forms of expression particular to African American literature.
8. Apply the rules of mechanics correctly in written work.
9. Employ credible academic sources as part of literary research.
10. Create coherent written critiques of works of literature.
