CHE100 - Introduction to Chemistry
Catalog Description: An introduction to general, organic and biological chemistry, with an emphasis on applications that are relevant to students pursuing health science programs. Topics include measurement, atomic and molecular structure, chemical and physical bonding, gas properties, chemical reactions, acid/base chemistry, organic molecule structure and functional groups, and common groups of biological molecules (carbohydrates, lipids and proteins). Two class hours, two lab hours. Not open to students with credits in, BIO 115, BIO 116, CHE 101 or PHY 131. Prerequisite: Completion of the Genesee Community College math requirement or concurrent enrollment in MAT 092 or MAT108. Students planning to enroll in Physical Therapy Assistant or a Mathematics or Natural Science program should choose MAT092.
CHE101 - General Chemistry 1
Catalog Description: Introduces the fundamental principles of chemistry including: atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, solutions, gases and thermochemistry. Recommended for students pursuing careers in science, engineering, health and/or technology fields. A solid math/algebra background is expected. Three class hours, three lab hours. Prerequisites: CHE 100 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher or Regents Chemistry with a Regents exam score 75 or higher or MAT 102 or higher. The math requirements may be taken concurrently with CHE 101. (Note: MAT 108 MAT 129, MAT 116 and MAT 117 are not accepted as math prerequisites.)
CHE102 - General Chemistry 2
Catalog Description: A continuation of General Chemistry 1 includes properties of solids, liquids and solutions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, acid/base chemistry, precipitation, thermodynamics, oxidation/reduction, and electrochemistry. Recommended for students pursuing careers in science, engineering, health and/or technology fields. A solid math/algebra background is expected. Spring and Summer only. Three class hours, three lab hours. Prerequisites: CHE 101 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.
CHE193 - Intro to Solar Manufacturing
Catalog Description: This course offers an introduction to the technology, manufacturing and market surrounding solar cells. There will be some focus on the manufacturing sites in the local area. This course is intended to provide students with background information about the potential local opportunities and the industry that surrounds them. Some chemistry and physics background may be helpful for the course, but is not required.
CHE201 - Organic Chemistry 1
Catalog Description: Survey of carbon-containing compounds, including bonding, intermolecular forces, configurations, stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms. Properties and reactions for the following functional groups: alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes, and alcohols. Fall only. Three class hours, three lab hours. Prerequisite: CHE102.
CHE202 - Organic Chemistry 2
Catalog Description: Application of common analytical techniques (mass spec, IR and NMR spectroscopy) used in organic chemistry. Topics include properties, reactions, synthesis and mechanisms of the following functional groups: alcohols, ethers, aromatics, ketones, aldehydes, amines, and carboxylic acids. Three class hours, three lab hours. Spring only. Prerequisite: CHE 201.
