|THE105 - Introduction to Musical Theatre|
Catalog Description: Introduces musical theatre form, personnel involved in the making of a musical, and a brief history. Includes audition techniques, song preparation from various stylistic periods, and performances of musical repertoire.
Lecture: 3 hrs.
Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
At the successful completion of the course, based upon extended writing, examination questions and classroom activities, students will be able to:
1.Identify four forms of ancient and European predecessors of American musical theatre, including Greek Comedies, Roman Spectacles, Miracle and Mystery Plays, Comedia del Arte, opera, comic opera, and operetta.
2.Identify a minimum of five American Musical Theatre styles, including Revues, Intimate revues, The Book Musical, The Concept Musical, The Black Musical, The Rock Musical, and Classics by determining the musical style, the absence or presence of a story line, and the type of creative collaboration.
3.Identify music from four historical periods of American Musical Theatre by completing a presentation of one song from each chosen period.
4.Present to a live audience, using audio, video, lecture, and performance skills, a 30 minute research presentation on a selected composer/lyricist/bookwriter team of musical theatre creators.*
5.Link events in American social and cultural history with a specific musical theatre style by selecting a show in video format and preparing a study sheet for that video presentation that includes style, creative team information, and at least five examples of social and cultural historical data from that era that correlate with that particular musical theatre show.
6.Review in standard journalistic style, at least one professional musical attended during the semester.
* This course objective has been identified as a student-learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the CollegeÃ¢Â€Â™s Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
