THE103 - Fundamentals of Acting
Catalog Description: Introduces basic acting techniques with emphasis on personal characterization. Student actors strengthen their self-knowledge and determine a unique point of view through individual and group improvisations, sensory exploration and text work.
Lecture: 3 hrs.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Participate in a daily 5-minute warm-up routine demonstrating physical and vocal flexibility, relaxation, and expressiveness.
2. Perform a 1- to 3-minute private activity in front of the student's classmates that demonstrates heightened sensory awareness and increased concentration powers as determined by a scoring rubric. [A private activity demonstrating breakdowns and beats of an activity such as brushing hair, reading a book, or manicuring nails.]
3. Write a five-page self-analysis paper documenting familiarity with the student's physical, vocal, social, biographical, and psychological self. Then deliver or participate in delivery of two monologues, completing an actor's monograph that accompanies the final scene, thus demonstrating the student's knowledge of actor blocking, character gestures, actor intentions, actor stakes, and physical and vocal characterization.*
4. Complete two 2-page acting critiques on Forum Players productions and actors, demonstrating definition and critical knowledge of the acting process.
5. Act in at least one monologue and two 3- to 5-minute scenes without the aid of an available script.
6. Participate in a minimum of two monologues and scenes and complete an actor's monograph that accompanies the final scene, demonstrating the student's knowledge of actor blocking, character gestures, actor intentions, actor stakes, and physical and vocal characterization.
7. Share insightful, constructive comments about classmates' and own work as indicators of organizational skills, collaboration skills, artistic commitment, and a heightened sense of responsibility as a result of attending all classes and rehearsals, volunteering to participate, and committing to acting work both in and out of class.
8. Submit a detailed and thorough acting journal demonstrating self-awareness and an understanding of the acting process.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
I. How do I learn to trust?
Through physical improvisation, movement exercises, and theatre games, the student actor learns to trust him/herself and others.
II. Where am I?
Work during this period will focus on increasing observation skills, heightening awareness of the five senses, and helping the actor in determining and delineating specific given circumstances. Class-work will include observation exercises, detail work, and sense memory exercises.
III. Who am I?
Exercises will help strengthen body awareness, emotional makeup, and personality. Actors will discover their own particular viewpoints and work on self-awareness.
IV. What do I want? Why is it important?
Exercises and dialogue work will focus on helping objectify what is needed in scene situations. Student actors will learn to identify objectives and stakes.
V. What's in my way?
Student actors will practice confronting obstacles that are added to improvisation and dialogue work.
VI. Putting it all together.
Student actors will work on final projects, putting together all aspects of acting already learned in class.
