OFT205 - Transcription

Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Builds the skills necessary to produce high quality correspondence and reports from dictated materials using word processing software. Emphasizes punctuation, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and efficiency. Two class hours, two laboratory hours. Prerequisites: OFT102.

Lecture: 2 hrs.

Lab: 2 hrs.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:

1.Transcribe a minimum of 15 chapters identifying different businesses which contain letters, reports, memos, and itineraries.
2.Apply the fundamentals of effective communication in the use of the English language: sentence structure, word usage, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and number usage by keying sentences, business letters, and memos with 96% accuracy.
3.Develop transcription skills requiring concentration and listening skills by transcribing documents with 96% accuracy. ***

All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.

Content Outline:
The transcription and production in a mailable form of the material presented on tape cassettes.

The first week of class will include instruction and practice in the use of a word processor and WordPerfect 5.1 software. The next three and one-half weeks will cover a review of language art skills; the remaining eleven weeks will be devoted to transcription exercises from a variety of businesses (travel, banking, insurance, manufacturing, service and government).

After the completion of two classwork tapes, a timed production transcription test will be given. Four production tests will be administered during the semester. The lowest test score will be dropped.
