FBM122 - Apparel Design and Draping
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: An introduction to apparel design through draping and pinning. Utilize a sketch design in a three-dimensional dress form. Apply basic techniques of fitting a garment using darts, sleeves, waistlines, bodice, and collars. Mark the new design to a flat pattern for mass production. Students must provide their own supplies. Spring only.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course as documented through writing, objective testing, case studies, laboratory practice, and/or classroom discussion, the student will be able to:

1.Explain the application of the fitting techniques as they relate to style, utility, and appearance.
2.Modify one garment design by adding or changing basic fitting techniques.
3.Critique at least 3 designs noting basic techniques for fitting the garment. Prepare a written or power point presentation of at least one critique.
4.Drape and pin a dress form applying basic techniques, where the finalized model will be made into a flat pattern.*
5.Create a final garment based on the flat pattern.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Week 2 Preparing the dress form, prepare gingham fabric Chapter 1

Week 5 Foundation bodice Chapter 4
Week 6 Foundation set-in sleeve Chapter 5
Week 7 & 8 Foundation bodice variations (French darts, change positions of darts) Chapter 6
Week 9 Dart-equivalent bodice styles (gathered waist, flange darts, princess bodice) Chapter 7
Week 10 Bodice designs (yokes, gathered front/back, empire, cowl, asymmetric bodice fronts) Chapter 8
Week 11 Skirt styles (A-line, gathered, flared, gored) Chapter 9
Week 12 & 13 Dress styles (sheath, torso bodice, v-neck shift dress, cap and extended cap sleeves, seamed dress such as foundation dress, French dart foundation dress, princess dress, empire dress, flared dress) Chapter 10
