|ENG101 - College Composition|
Catalog Description: Concentrates on the rhetorical principles and strategies essential for clear, effective academic writing. Emphasizes the stages of the writing process and the critical thinking skills necessary to create appropriately researched and documented college level prose. Draws readings and models for analysis from a variety of college level sources. Requires students to produce a minimum of 20 pages of writing, excluding exercises and quizzes. Prerequisite: ENG 100 or ESL 100 with a grade of 'C' or higher or by placement.
Lecture: 3 hrs.
Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Employ the stages of the writing process to produce and revise college level academic prose - to be assessed by measuring an argumentative paper (3 pages minimum) against its rough draft (2 pages minimum) using a full-time faculty approved rubric;*
2. Adjust the purpose and means of development of their writing to match the needs of specific audiences and rhetorical situations;
3. Recognize and accurately represent the purposes, strategies, and rhetorical devices in the writing of others, both peer and professional;
4. Judge the reliability and usefulness of primary and secondary sources, both print and electronic;
5. Incorporate relevant and appropriately documented research into their own essays.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

II. Instruction by a GCC librarian in research methods, appropriate online databases, and documentation as they apply to a variety of papers and readings.
III. Introduction to the purposes and forms common to academic writing
A) Purposes common to academic writing (including, but not limited to)
B) Forms common to academic writing (including, as examples)
IV. *Exploration through selected readings and writing assignments of rhetorical situations common to college level academic prose.
* Reading and writing assignments based on materials approved by full-time discipline faculty.
