CHE201 - Organic Chemistry 1

Catalog Description: Survey of carbon-containing compounds, including bonding, intermolecular forces, configurations, stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms. Properties and reactions for the following functional groups: alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes, and alcohols. Fall only. Three class hours, three lab hours. Prerequisite: CHE102.

Lecture: 3 hrs.
Lab: 3 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe organic molecule bonding and geometry, using both the Lewis structure and molecular orbital models.
2. Draw and describe conformations, using Newman projection and perspective drawings.
3. Draw reaction mechanisms using the curved arrow convention and explain the information provided in a reaction energy diagram.
4. Identify asymmetric atoms and chiral compounds, describe relationships between stereoisomers and draw them, using both perspective and Fischer diagrams.
5. Predict the products of substitution and elimination reactions, and explain what factors favor each type of reaction.
6. Identify the differences between first-order and second-order substitutions and eliminations, and explain what factors determine the order of the reaction.
7. Given a set of reaction conditions, identify the possible mechanisms, and predict which mechanism(s) and product(s) are most likely.
8. Predict products, design syntheses and show mechanisms for selected reactions involving alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes and alcohols. Include stereochemistry and regiochemistry information, as appropriate.
9. Name and describe physical properties of alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes and alcohols.
10. Apply data, concepts and models related to the content areas of this course.*
11. Explore natural phenomena through observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, evaluation of evidence, and employment of mathematical analysis.*
