|ART107 - Typography and Layout|
Catalog Description: Introduces the basics of using type in the graphic arts. Students clarify and enhance visual messages through the use of type and visual placement (layout) of information. Two class hours, two studio hours. Prerequisites: ART105 and ART209.
Lecture: 2 hrs.
Lab: 2 hrs.
Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of the course, as documented by projects, discussion, and presentations, the student will be able to:
1.Demonstrate knowledge of the basic elements of design and how those elements control the flow and impact of information as documented by each of the following:
a.Alignment:students will explain the importance of maintaining a visual
connection between elements on a page and describe how
that connection controls the flow of information within the page.
b.Proximity:students will demonstrate the ability to effectively group
related elements of information.
c.Contrast:students will create contrast between elements thus creating
visual definition within their design.
d.Repetition:students will explain how repetition of elements within a
page can visually organize and relate elements.
2.Demonstrate the ability to describe and employ basic construction, families and uses of different fonts, including Serif-Oldstyle/Slab/Modern, San, Script and Decorative.
3.Combine fonts effectively using the principles of Concord, Contrast, and Conflict.
4.Set Leading and Kerning within a document by employing the following skills:
Control the flow of information
Set kerning for titles
Demonstrate knowledge of Kerning pairs, and
Set Leading in body copy to maximize legibility
5.Distinguish between ineffectual type and effective use of type through the examination of real world examples and redesign of ineffectual ads.
6.Set body copy that is readable and uses appropriate fonts and formatting.
7.Control the technical aspects of printing, including resolution, file types for printing, fonts, and media for transport.
8.Demonstrate design skills by creating a final project that involves a design campaign for a local organization.*
This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
I.Basic principles of layout
Students will understand how to organize information effectively.
Students will be able to identify the parts of a font
III.Type-families and uses
Students will be able to identify and classify type families as well as identify their proper usage.
IV.Leading and Kerning
Students will be able to apply proper leading and kerning to their designs.
V.Learning to distinguish between ineffectual type and effective use of type through the examination of real world examples.
Through the examination and critique of real world examples students will be able to distinguish effective uses of type.
VI.Digital font management
Students will be able to distinguish between true type and postscript fonts as well as font installation and related technology.
Students will demonstrate their typographic skills with the completion of a design project. As part of this project they will learn how to manage digital fonts.
