Interlibrary Loan & Resource Sharing
What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services allow members of the college community to access materials from other libraries.
GCC's Alfred C. O'Connell library cooperates with libraries nation-wide to lend and borrow materials to support research and education. Resource Sharing is a term referring to an agreement between a group of libraries, as we participate in Resource Sharing with SUNY for physical materials (not articles). These loan periods are longer, often ship more quickly, and are easily renewed through your My Library Account dashboard.
Please request your items as early as possible before your assignment deadline.
ILLiad requests are processed Monday-Friday, except during holidays or closures. For more information, please contact us at libraryILL@genesee.edu.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Interlibrary Loan services are available to all currently registered GCC students, faculty, faculty emeritus, staff, administrators, and members of the GCC Board of Trustees. Because we are unable to mail items directly to patrons, Online Learners who are not affiliated with a specific GCC campus may only request interlibrary loan materials that can be delivered electronically (i.e., articles).
GCC's ILL service is not available to: community patrons, visitors, Open Access students, or Empire State College students. If you are a member of any of these groups, we recommend that you use your public library's ILL services.
Books, DVDs, music CDs, copies of articles and government documents are generally available for borrowing. Reference books, textbooks, rare or historical items, entire issues of journals, current "bestsellers," and genealogical materials are generally not available for borrowing.
Books, etc.: The borrowing period is determined by the lending library, so this time period varies. When an item arrives from a lending library, the due date is assigned, and written on the item label. Some lending libraries will allow renewals for additional lending time. You may request a renewal through the ILLiad online system. You will be notified via GCC email as to the status of your renewal request. You may also contact the ILL Department at (585) 345-6922 before the book is due to see if a renewal is possible.
Articles: An electronic(pdf) version of your article will be delivered to your ILLiad account. You will be notified via GCC email that your article is available and will be given further instructions for retrieving it. Electronically delivered articles will be available to you for 30 days only. We suggest that you print out or download your article when you first view it as a safeguard against losing access later.
Contact a librarian (in person or via Ask a Librarian) for assistance with locating alternative sources for your assignment.
You may have 10 active requests at any one time. Once you have returned one or more of your items, you can keep requesting items until you reach the maximum 10 items again.
Fees are rare, but possible. They are determined by the lending library. If there is the potential for a fee, we will contact you via GCC email to ask if you are willing to pay the fee. If you do not respond to this email, we will not process your request.
From a Find it! search, click on the item you want. You will need to be signed in to request it.
After signing in, you will be able to click on the Get It button.
On the next screen you will see the request form, which will be auto-populated. Click Send Request.
You will receive an email when the item is ready for pickup at our Batavia campus.
Campus Center and Online Learning students: for information about requesting materials see the FAQ on Campus Centers and Online Learning Library Services. Please contact Nicki Lerczak for more assistance.
An average of 1-2 weeks for book loans and less than a week for article copies.
We will contact you via GCC email when your item is ready for pickup. If we are unable to obtain the requested item, we will notify you via GCC email as soon as possible.
Please return books obtained via ILLiad on or before the date due. Because this is a special loan from another library, it is important to return books promptly so that we can maintain good relationships with lending libraries. Books borrowed through ILL are the property of the lending library, not the GCC library. Borrowers are responsible for any ILL items that are lost or damaged, and must pay any and all replacement & processing costs, as determined by the lending library. If you do not return your material on time, you will be blocked from using ILLiad and from checking out items from the GCC library. A hold may also be applied to your GCC account.
