Interpersonal Communication

Introduces communication theories affecting interpersonal and small group situations. Students participate in a number of writing activities and in-class discussions and activities in order to demonstrate the theoretical aspects of the process of interpersonal communication.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify and explain theories of interpersonal communication.
2. Describe active listening strategies.
3. Apply and appraise effective communication principles.
4. Discuss the role of empathy in creating effective group communications.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of various verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
6. Enhance presentations with judicious choices and designs of visual aids (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.).
7. Discuss the importance of, and requirements for, civic discourse.
8. Demonstrate the skills that reflect consideration of multiple viewpoints through ethical and constructive class discussion.
