Voice and Articulation

Enables public speakers to improve voice, articulation, analysis of performance pieces, and stage presence. Covers both the process used in creating voice and the application of process to use and control pitch, loudness, quality, and rate. Includes aspects of nonverbal communication, and use of the International Phonetic Alphabet to explore dialects. Increases the ability to form the proper placement and sounds of the IPA so the speaker can speak with a General American Dialect. Develops critical thinking through analyzing texts through research and performance.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate diaphragmatic breathing and breath control with an emphasis on relieving tension and creating a state of relaxation.
2. List and describe the organs and process of speech (breathing, phonation, resonation, and articulation).
3. Identify and describe various aspects of vocal expression (rate, pitch, volume, stress, and resonance).
4. Distinguish between the General American dialect and regionalisms.
5. Produce a General American dialect when reading or performing a monologue or poem.
6. Employ appropriate non-verbal movements to enhance vocal performance using a monologue or poem.
7. Differentiate between performative and persuasive speaking using a monologue, poem, or essay.
8. Analyze a play on a social issue and defend a point of view on the topic listing arguments taken from the literary work.
9. Analyze character objectives from opposing views on a social or cultural issue that is performed in a monologue from a play.
