Reading in the Disciplines

Introduces literal and critical reading skills essential for successful collegiate level course work. Increases vocabulary and critical thinking skills for comprehending text in all discipline areas. Promotes personal lifelong reading habits. Requires demonstration of ability to read beyond twelfth-grade level, based on standardized measures and class work. This course may be used as a general elective. Successful completion of this course meets the College’s reading requirement for graduation. Prerequisite: REA 091 or IRW 091 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, or concurrent enrollment in IRW 091, or by placement.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Differentiate between different types and purposes of texts (essays, textbooks, journal articles, etc.).
2. Practice various reading strategies as applicable (SQ3R, skimming/scanning, annotating, Cornell Notes, etc.).
3. Utilize techniques for strengthening vocabulary.
4. Identify thesis statements with supporting claims in text.
5. Create graphic or semantic organizers through structural analysis of longer passages in all types of academic reading (textbooks, journal articles, internet and library database articles, essays, etc.).
6. Practice summary strategies for reading comprehension.
7. Make appropriate inferences while reading.
8. Distinguish opinion from fact.
