Physics With Calculus 2
Introduces electric fields of discrete and continuous charges, Gauss’s law, potential, DC circuits, capacitance, magnetic fields, Ampere’s law, induction, Maxwell’s equations, AC circuits, and thermodynamic processes and laws. Three class hours, three lab hours. Spring only. Prerequisites: PHY131 and MAT 142 (MAT 142 can be taken concurrently with PHY 132).
Subject Code: PHY
Course Number: 132
Credits: 4
Lecture Hours 3
Lab Hours: 3
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply basic principles of electromagnetism conceptually, using proper terminology. (This includes electric fields and potentials, magnetic fields and forces, induction, Maxwell’s equations, DC and AC circuits including capacitors and inductors.)
2. Apply the first and second laws of thermodynamics (and related topics) conceptually, using proper terminology.
3. Translate questions about physical topics into mathematical expressions, including problems which involve setting up integrals.
4. Solve the equations they have set up. (This includes fluent use of algebra, trigonometry, calculus and vector arithmetic in three dimensions including dot and cross products. Also appropriate use of units and graphs.)
5. Reason creatively, developing solutions to multi-step problems which are not identical to others they have seen before.
6. Use laboratory equipment, given written instructions, to demonstrate and verify theoretical principles in actual physical systems.
7. Analyze the results of laboratory experiments, including their probable error, to draw conclusions on whether they are in agreement with generally accepted values or principles.
8. Prepare lab reports which clearly convey the underlying ideas of experiments as well as the methods and results.
Effective Term: Fall 2025
