Theory and Techniques of Coaching
Introduces the history of interscholastic athletics in New York State. Presents the objectives, rules, regulations and policies of athletics, as well as performance skills, technical information, and organization and management practices. The special training and conditioning of the athletes in specific sports, the fitting of equipment, specific safety precautions and officiating methods will also be examined. An internship that will include practical experience as a coach in the specific sport and periods of observing other approved coaches in that specific sport will also be required.

1. Identify athletic eligibility standards as per the New York State public high school athletic ruling organizations.
2. Identify district policies and guidelines as per the New York State public high school athletic ruling organizations.
3. Develop a list of preseason “things to do” in preparation for the regular season.
4. Identify guidelines for working with officials.
5. Complete a player evaluation.
6. Provide a scouting report.
7. Develop a season plan specific to your chosen sport.
8. Break down the major skills specific to your chosen sport.
9. Implement a developed practice plan specific to your chosen sport.
10. Identify the tactical strategies specific to your chosen sport.
11. Identify the educational goals of a quality athletic program.
12. Discuss coaching code of ethics.
