Jazz Dance 1

Introduces jazz dance as an art form through exploration of traditional jazz technique, history and aesthetics. Includes studio classes in traditional jazz as well as observation of jazz dance on video and live in concert (when possible) and discussion of reading assignments and research.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss the origins and historical development of traditional jazz dance.
2. Identify three pioneers and three contemporary artists in the field and discuss their contributions.
3. Accurately demonstrate a basic warm up and centre floor series.
4. Demonstrate a basic traveling phrase from memory.
5. Create a one minute phrase.
6. Discuss performances seen live and/or on video.
7. Choreograph 3 short movement studies incorporating traditional jazz technique and vocabulary.
8. Choreograph and perform a 3 minute final project to music recorded on video/DVD.*
