Professional Issues in Nursing

Introduces the student to professional issues relevant to current trends in nursing, leadership and management. The emphasis is placed on role transition and promoting an environment of quality patient care and safety. Prerequisites: BIO 153, NUR 112, and NUR 119 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, and NUR LC2 with a grade of ‘CP’. Prerequisites for PN to RN students: NUR 129 and BIO 153 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher. Co-requisites: NUR 211 and NUR LC3.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss standards of professional nursing practice.
2. Explain the impact of professional development on the nursing care of clients.
3. Compare and contrast the principles of nursing leadership and management.
4. Analyze strategies to prevent or manage conflict, incivility, and violence in the workplace.
5. Identify the nurse’s role in cost-effective healthcare, including quality improvement, case management, and critical pathways.
6. Implement principles of delegation to promote effective nursing care.
7. Prioritize nursing care for individual clients and groups of clients.
8. Apply moral principles and Nurses Code of Ethics in nursing practice, through analysis of ethical issues in healthcare.
9. Examine the nurse’s role in promoting safety, including, emergency preparedness, and emergency response for clients.
