Ldrship in Community College
This course will engage participants in the identification and refinement of the knowledge and skills necessary to the nurturing of a student-centered community college work environment that promotes integrity, professionalism, high standards of service, and unity-of-purpose. Sample topics to be covered include: the functions and services of a college; student and employee interaction; expectations of external stakeholders; service processes across departments; and current social, political, and economic issues in higher education. Sample skills developed or reinforced include: communicating effectively across constituencies; building and empowering teams; formal and informal collaboration; self-management; and organizational interdependence. Curriculum will include coverage of key institutional policies and procedures; selected policies and procedures from the State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Education Department (NYSED); the Middle States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE) Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation; and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Competencies for Community College Leaders.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain how the interdependence of departments and employees forms the basis for effective student support at a community college.
2. Identify a “student-centered organization,” and describe its important characteristics.
3. Describe key aspects of shared governance within the context of a community college.
4. Discuss a variety of ethical standards as they apply to employees of a community college (professional, federal or state government, etc.).
5. Explain how community colleges interact with and respond to a variety of external forces (local stakeholders; county, state, and federal governments; fluctuations in demographics; economic trends; etc.).
6. Discuss various aspects of inclusion, equity, or diversity as they pertain to the students or employees of a community college.
7. Meet internal expectations for professional behavior within any given office or department of a community college.
8. Explain how curriculum, teaching, academic assessment, and student learning are related and impact one another.
9. Describe effective strategies for contributing constructively as a member of team, or in collaboration with another colleague.
10. Apply effective self-management strategies to achieve appropriate professional and personal life balance.
