Alcohol and Drug Treatment

Prepares students with the basic skills to work with individuals with a substance use disorder in a formal treatment setting. Students will develop assessment and diagnostics skills, learn how to read medical and toxicology reports, and build basic skills for promoting positive treatment outcomes. Prerequisite: HUS 113

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify the indicators of co-occurring mental health disorders.
2. Identify the process of screening and referrals for mental and physical health issues.
3. Discuss the significance of diagnostic medical reports.
4. Identify behaviors that may indicate other addictive behaviors.
5. Describe how integrated care impacts substance dependence recovery.
6. Discuss how to interpret reports from other professionals, to include recognizing the need for additional information and collateral reports.
7. Explain the process of data collection pertaining to assessment and treatment.
8. Apply the diagnostic criteria from the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual to assess and diagnose a client for a substance use disorder.
9. Discuss the risk factors to substance dependence and lethality.
10. Describe how to build rapport and engage clients in treatment options.
11. Apply the stages of change model in promoting engagement in treatment.
