Alcohol/Drug Use and Abuse

Examines the symptoms, physical, pharmacological, psychological, and social effects of addiction as a disease and the impact on society. Covers treatment programs and options.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss the history and changes of substance use diagnosis and treatment.
2. Differentiate chemical use, abuse, and substance use disorder according to the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
3. Identify and discuss the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the brain and body (including blood alcohol content).
4. Identify the possible interactions between alcohol and other drug pharmacology.
5. Discuss signs and symptoms of substance use including intoxication, tolerance, and withdrawal.
6. Identify and discuss the biological, psychological, and social aspects of substance use disorder.
7. Identify cognitive and behavioral aspects of substance use (including the impact of trauma).
8. Discuss the potential for multiple substance use.
9. Explain how evidence-based practice influences best practice standards in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of clients (must include medication assisted treatment, client informed choice and abstinence).
10. Discuss non-traditional treatment practices (yoga, meditation, acupuncture, etc.).
11. Identify how to determine treatment readiness.
12. Identify resources available for funding prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery.
13. Explain emergency procedures for overdose and acute withdrawal.
14. Discuss how to assess crisis situations to facilitate recovery.
