Elementary English 2

A continuation of ESL 090: Elementary English I. Emphasizes the ability to use and understand English in context. Students who pass with a C or higher can express themselves orally, read authentic materials, understand oral input and write compositions at the high novice level. Requires additional weekly laboratory practice. Prerequisite: by completion of ESL 090 with a grade of ‘C’ or better, by placement test, or by instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Paraphrase key points of authentic academic texts and videos in English.
2. Create short essays based on given themes, incorporating basic citation rules.
3. Use English academic vocabulary in the creation of written work.
4. Use English conventions in the creation of written work.
5. Utilize standard rhetorical patterns (analysis, compare/contrast, description, summary, argument, etc.) in common college-level writing assignments.
6. Practice basic interview techniques.
7. Interpret American cultural behaviors and norms in various contexts.
8. Initiate, and respond to, spontaneous conversational cues in English.
